By some estimates, 50 percent of the world’s oysters used to come from New York Harbor. In the early 20th Century, local reefs succumb to over-harvesting and pollution. But, more, recently there’s been a movement to rehabilitate New York Harbor’s oyster population (though you wouldn’t want to eat any of these little bivalves today).
NYC’s Harbor School is among the many organizations helping to rehabilitate New York Harbor, one oyster reef at a time. Check out their work in this video from Science & the City, the public outreach program of the New York Academy of Sciences.
Come to S&C’s big oyster bash on April 26th. You’ll hear a panel of experts on harbor rehabilitation using oysters, plus see a special presentation by students from the Harbor School–oyster tastings included!
